This feature was provided by a special guest editor, at the invitation of Jason Salzenstein. It originally appeared in a now-defunct online publication. It’s part two of a visit to Foxwoods, continued from this post. FUN Casino Madness We checked out all of the casinos- the new one at the MGM Grand and the three at Foxwoods. Obviously they can’t be compared to Vegas casinos, so I won’t bother. However, you can find pretty much any game you want to play. The staff is great- not the jaded “final-chapter” types you sometimes find in Vegas. I asked a technician fixing a slot machine if he could set it so that I would win; with a mischievous smile, he said, “I can do that…” (But he didn’t.) One nice characteristic of the casino at the new MGM Grand is that it’s not excessively “in your face” with noise, lights and the general insanity typical of an American casino. This is particularly true in the poker room which, despite being on the world poker tour circuit, is surprisingly low-key. Perhaps this had something to do with the fact that they stop serving alcohol at 1am… Yep- last call in a casino. Who’d have guessed? I was [...]

Can’t even tell you how awesome the food is at Sipz; why can we not get a veggie place like this in Boston? Seriously… The service here is amazing- the host killed it (in a good way.) Because my take-out order took longer than expected (13 minutes instead of 10 I think), he gave me two free cupcakes! (Love!) This place is fabulously delicious and I want to go back. Now. See my Yelp review here. ©2012 très jason. All Rights Reserved..

This feature was provided by a special guest editor, at the invitation of Jason Salzenstein. The thick forests of southern Connecticut stretching for miles in every direction provide a feeling of isolation and peace; inside, however, the vibe could not be more, well, vibrant. MGM Grand has enhanced the Foxwoods experience, adding new fine dining options, a tastefully appointed casino, an elegant spa, and a hot nightclub- and that’s just the beginning. The new hotel offers 800 rooms in three tiers of luxury. All have a big flat-screen TV, iPod dock, fine linens and bath products, and free WiFi. Most notably, the rooms are quiet. My usual experience at a casino or resort hotel is that of doors slamming in the hall at all hours, the whir of elevators audible through the walls, endless loud chatter coming from the corridors, and the drone of the TVs in the adjacent rooms. Not here. Even the hotel lobby is a vast improvement over the traditional casino hotel. In addition to the spacious and tastefully decorated reception area, there’s a plush lounge for hotel guests only. Ambient music coordinated with each space creates distinct moods for the casino, the lobby, and the lounge- [...]
