Yellow plaid tie… Today’s Look

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Today’s the first ‘real’ day back to school for Babson students. I’m guessing it’s going to be a bit insane; just hoping I can find a parking spot…

Wore a fancy tie* to celebrate the first day. Rest o’ the outfit is pretty boring. GAP white collared button down, grey windowpane plaid BR pants, Cole Haan boots. (Speaking of CH- saw a FABULOUS CH bag at the outlets in western MA this weekend but passed. $795 minus 30% then another 30%, but still a bit much…)

*Hopefully you realized that I was being totally sarcastic about the use of ‘fancy’…

Today’s look- in my ‘new’ closet!

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Long time no look…

The closet’s been in a bit of disarray lately, so I’ve resisted the pics. Managed to get it reasonably decent last nite, so thought I’d throw one out there today… (Watch for pics of the closet next week.)

I miss Bertha…

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

I love my Smart Car (mostly), but I miss Bertha something fierce. Yes, the Smart gets great gas mileage, it’s cute, and it’s a convertible, but it also feels like you’re going to die when you hit a pothole, sewer cover, or rock.

It’s also incredibly uncomfortable after about 45-minutes, and it seems to be falling apart as I write.

Yes, we had to replace the brakes (not the brake pads, the brakes- all of them; what were you thinking Land Rover???) on the Disco every 18-months or so (at a cost of about $1600), but I knew that going into it, and given the plush seats, dual moonroofs, and giant, comfortable monstrosity-ness, it was worth it. I think I’d rather pay that than nickel-and-dime crap (headlights, taillights, blower motor, electrical “issues,” wheels (from potholes), tires (from potholes), etc. every few months.

Bertha, if you’re reading this, come back home… we miss you.

My boyfriend, the gardener

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Just got this picture from the bf, in an email with the subject: Today’s harvest, Tomorrow’s dinner. How cute is he!?!

It's going to be an interesting salad...

He grew all of these veggies in our (“our” – as in they’re in our yard, and he takes care of them and I walk past them on the way to the car) gardens; this is the biggest “harvest” so far. Last year we were buried in tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini (one of which I’m not crazy about but will eat if the nasty stuff inside is scooped out, one which I think is as pointless as rhubarb, and only exists to gross me out and take up space inside otherwise-delicious chocolate cakes, and the third which I quite like, but after eating every day – sometimes twice – for a week couldn’t take any more), so I’m VERY happy to see a bit more vegetable diversity this year.

Considering how much I hate to be outside (the dirt, bugs, heat, humidity…) unless I’m lying on the beach at a 5-star resort in a non-English speaking country, it’s amazing we’ve lasted this long. Opposites definitely do attract!

iPhone 4 does NOT like cats…

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Apparently the folks on the flash team in the camera division of the iPhone 4 development project do not like cats. Look at what the flash did to my sweet little Lou’s eyes- he looks like one of the ThunderCats, about to shoot me with fiery craziness! Anyway, Apple, you better fix this problem or all those single old cat ladies are never going to buy version 5…

I’m not a professional…

…but I play one in my office!

Today’s look :: versatile?

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Dressing for two very different events today… not my favorite thing. Academic administration all day; Sex & the City screening tonight.

B/W American Rag gingham western style shirt
Mini chalk-stripe Banana Republic pants
Hermes belt
Guess boots (which I need a replacement for!!!)
Marc Jacobs tote-brief (unseen)

Switching up the background…

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Decided to use the bedroom mirror to switch things up a bit since today’s look is a bit boring…

Ignore the big yellow thing on the floor; the AC managed to get downstairs from the attic, but not quite into the window.

I got quoted!

Friday, May 7th, 2010

An excellent writer – and fabulous woman – quoted me in a feature on (gay) Pittsburgh for Pop City. Here’s a bit of what I had to say:

A keen observer of gay communities across the U.S. is Jason Salzenstein, Style and Travel Editor for Edge, a leading online gay network. “Most mid-sized cities in the U.S. are no different than anywhere else,” he notes. “You see the same old stereotypes and biases, they just show up more frequently.” Based in Boston, Salzenstein finds that his city’s ethnic tribes can be supportive of the gay lifestyle – or not. “Boston can be quasi-progressive and Kennedy-esque, in public at least,” he says. “But the machismo in the culture can make it less accepting.”

What’s he wearing?

Kind of a boring-ish day for fashion, but it’s a bit gray and I’m running around doing random (i.e. not so exciting) things, so didn’t put a lot of energy to it.

Also, I was running a bit late, to be perfectly honest.

I do have one piece of ‘fab,’ today: a simple Marc Jacobs tote in a slightly sheeny black.

I also have a ’secret’ about one of my pieces… Kind of odd actually, but I’m testing out a shirt (to write about) that has special built-in pads (think round maxis in cotton, or thinner shoulder pads) in the ‘underarm area’ to absorb and/or dissipate perspiration.

So far, it’s interesting. Feels like I’ve got a small washcloth under my arms, but I got used to it quickly. I’ll give an update later on in the day, especially if it gets warmer and I begin to ‘glow’ a bit…
