For my first day working in-office at Babson…
Spiffed-out but not contrived, non?
Just posted a little news piece on EDGE, so you can read the whole story there, but the gist is that the gay icon is coming back in April and May for a (fairly large) handful of shows, with some new costumes (by Bob Mackie, of course) and a new opening number.
Unfortunately I’m guessing she won’t be spending any more time on stage, which means that she’s still only there about half the time- the rest is filled with video clips (that we’ve all seen before).
She’s still a goddess though.
A few months ago I was asked by the brilliant photographer, Dylan Rosser, to write the foreword for his new book of male photography, RED. Dylan had read some of my coffee table book reviews and apparently liked my style, the way I write, my fabulous hair, beauty, brains…
Being familiar with his work, of course I accepted, and the book came out last week. I’m not saying that you should go pick up a copy or anything, but if you like men, you really should; it’s incredible.
You can read my review of it for EDGE here, and then buy it at Amazon.com
Yesterday another handful of possible gift guide items showed up on my doorstep (I’m assuming thanks to the wonderful people at UPS, FedEx and the US Postal Service; most don’t bother ringing the bell to let me know they’re there, because that would be too easy…), which is quite normal given the time of the year and the fact that this past week I’ve been requesting samples of the things I’m 99% sure will be featured. What isn’t't normal is the fact that I’m pretty sure that I found my personal favorite of the year- and it’s not even crazy expensive.
It is fabulous, however.
My friend Sherri-Lyn reps a line of jewelry from Canada called ICEROCK, and she sent me one of their best-sellers – and the piece they became famous for – the Angel Wing. As soon as I opened the box I knew I was going to love it, but when I put it on I went crazy! It’s like the perfect combination of rock and sophistication- a little bit “wild and naughty” but all grown up. Does that make sense? The chain that came with it was a few inches too long for me, so I got in the car, drove to the mall (sorry, the “collection”), and bought a new one the same day. Crazy? A bit, but I’m totally in love!
The collection (the Angel Wing collection, not the mall) comes in 10 styles, including white and yellow gold and various precious stones. They also do Angel Wing cufflinks for guys, but personally I’ll stick with the necklace.
I’ll add a photo of me wearing it as soon as I remember to take one when I’m not in my pajamas and Angel Wing. It’s an interesting look, but not one I’m willing to share.
Check out the collection here, and watch for it in the EDGE Holiday Gift Guide for Fashionistas…
I’ve been doing a lot of projects lately that could (frighteningly) be called “crafts,” which scares me. Granted they’re all very contemporary, modern and fabulous, but anytime I’m using a glue gun or sewing machine, it scares me.
Speaking of sewing machines, ever since I gave away the $8 million Project Runway contraption (because I couldn’t even get through the first few pages of the manual and Russ couldn’t figure out how to thread it- a common challenge, I’ve since discovered), I’ve been regretting it. So, rather than wallow in my own pity drinking my tears for sustenance (which clearly I was doing), I decided to buy a new one.
For $25.
Oh yeah- it’s one step up from the As Seen On TV hand sewers, but it’s a very small step. The box it came in is about the size of a shoe box – but shorter – and I’m scared to open it. I think it’s a mini-me sewing machine; exactly the same as a regular one, just shrunken. (I’d make a few jokes here about the Lollipop Guild, etc., but that would be insensitive, and we wouldn’t want that.) Luckily I’ve got my grandma’s hands, so I’m hoping the small size – and what’s billed to be an incredibly simple operation – will work for the few simple things I need- like sewing a tube of velvet to cover the cord of the lamp that I’m currently building.
Yep- I’m finally getting around to making my version of one of the insanely large (and even more insanely expensive) crystal column chandeliers like the ones hanging in Planet Hollywood in Vegas. (Similar to the one pictured here; that one’s Swarovski, and – I believe – hanging in their NY flagship store.) I’ve loved them since the first time I went and after seeing them a few months ago when I went to see Peepshow on a press trip, I decided it was time. Rather than buy one for (upwards of) $5,000 I’m going to make my own. I found a (fabulous!) website – ShopWildThings.com – which sounds like a clearinghouse for “ladies – or gentlemen – of the night,” but is in fact a fabulous online shop for beaded curtains, chandeliers and other blinged-out party decor of all sorts. I spent less than $100 on a beaded curtain, which together with my salad bowl from Target, Home Depot shop light and glue for the glue gun, will probably set me back about $150. Much better than five grand I think.
No guarantees of how it’s going to turn out obviously, but so far so good. Fortunately for you (or maybe not) I bribed Russ into taking photos and video of the whole process so that I can write a story about it for EDGE and hopefully embed a video, which will be available on the site and through YouTube.
Anyway, look for that story, update, and video soon. Now I’ve got to go work on my DIY Louis Vuitton laptop sleeve… let’s pray I don’t mess that up- that would be a very expensive mistake…
AND YOU BETTER READ IT!!! : )
Accessories make the man. (And the computer.)
Any good gay knows that it’s all about the accessories. Of course normally that refers to clothing and one’s personal ensemble, but the philosophy extends to home décor and other areas as well- including your computer. EDGE Style Editor Jason Salzenstein recently got a new iMac and decided it was time to upgrade his “Mac-cessories” as well. Check out his top choices…
